Yannis Ritsos - Poems: Selected Books - Volume II: Ritsos, Yannis, Aligizakis, Manolis, Aligizakis, Manolis: Amazon.sg: Books

The shorter poems gathered in this volume present what Ritsos calls “simple things” that turn out not to be simple at all. Here we find a world of subtle nuances, in which everyday events hide much that is threatening, oppressive, and spiritually vacuous — but the poems also provide lyrical and idyllic interludes, along with cunning re-creations of Greek mythology and history. Τιμωρία. Μιά μέρα, ο χρόνος παίρνει τήν εκδίκησή του γιά λογαριασμό τών πικρα- μένων, In long poems like his celebrated Romiosyni (1947), Moonlight Sonata (1956) and most of his later volumes, Ritsos writes with compassion and hope, celebrating the life, toil, and dignity of the common man in an unadorned and direct language. In 1967, Ritsos was arrested again by the Greek junta and exiled, and was prohibited from publishing One of modern Greece’s most widely translated poets, Ritsos moved from an early concern with classical themes and style to a more deeply personal lyricism. His writing reflects family tragedies, a stay in a tuberculosis ward, and his political engagement against dictatorship that earned him periods of deportation and house arrest. Ritsos, Jannis. Åtbörder: dikter. [tr.by]: Theodor Kallifatides & Östen Sjöstrand. Stockholm: Wahlström & Widstrand, 1971. 165p. Original title: (Selected works)

As in our dreams, here, too, one is a spectator. Much in his poetry speaks of the ordinary, the prosaic: thus, the two—the dream, the prosaic—are merged. There is also a strain, a tension: a shadow of war, politics, death, poverty, prison. A shadow, and not the thing. Ritsos' poems are always a treat and the translation is pretty good (though, of course, more or less missing the lyrical quality of Greek.) This will most likely remain in my 'currently reading' shelf for a while; one does not read poetry as one reads an Agatha Christie novel.
